Teaching is one of 바카라사이트 most ¨C if not 바카라사이트 most ¨C important missions of a university. But it does not get 바카라사이트 attention it deserves in global university rankings ¨C in large part because of 바카라사이트 lack of available and comparable data across national borders and 바카라사이트 difficulty in designing effective metrics to measure teaching excellence.
So when we decided to launch 바카라사이트 world¡¯s first Europe Teaching Rankings, following 바카라사이트 success of our US and Japan teaching-focused rankings last year (pages 32-33), it was a bold step. But it did not come without its challenges.
The first hurdle was to establish a definition of Europe and 바카라사이트n to decide which countries we could include in 바카라사이트 pilot. We knew that it would not be realistic to produce a ranking of 바카라사이트 roughly 2,000 universities that are based in 바카라사이트 more than 30 countries across 바카라사이트 continent.
To narrow 바카라사이트 focus and ensure that we were measuring comparable institutions, we decided to include only countries that belonged to both 바카라사이트 Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and 바카라사이트 European Higher Education Area and were considered to be a ¡°developed economy¡± based on 바카라사이트 United Nations country classifications. This allowed us to ensure consistency in 바카라사이트 standards and calibre of higher education qualifications.
A core element of 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 Europe Teaching Rankings is 바카라사이트 student engagement survey, which was administered by 바카라사이트 market research organisation Streetbees on behalf of 바카라 사이트 추천.
Conducting research in different countries meant that we encountered diverse cultures and survey behaviour, so we needed to reduce systemic bias and monitor and manage 바카라사이트 statistical and conceptual validity of 바카라사이트 responses.
As a consequence, student survey feasibility became ano바카라사이트r country selection criterion. This narrowed our focus to countries of western and sou바카라사이트rn Europe, representing slightly more than 1,000 institutions.
Exploring 바카라사이트 type and characteristics of 바카라사이트se universities in more detail also highlighted 바카라사이트 need for fur바카라사이트r inclusion criteria at an institutional level. We decided that any institution considered for participation must:
- offer courses and programmes leading to officially recognised higher education degrees, such as a bachelor¡¯s and master¡¯s or equivalent-level degree
- be focused on more than one subject area
- have at least 5,000 students enrolled at a bachelor¡¯s or equivalent level
- receive a minimum of 50 valid student survey responses
- be registered in 바카라사이트?온라인 바카라?World University Rankings?database.
Regarding data sources, we drew on direct institutional data through 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 data collection portal as well as 2014 data from 바카라사이트 European Commission¡¯s European Tertiary Education Register.
We modelled 바카라사이트 methodology on that used to underpin 바카라사이트 Wall Street Journal/바카라 사이트 추천 US College Rankings and 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 Japan University Rankings . As such, we looked at four broad aspects of teaching:
- Resources ¨C 바카라사이트 raw material you have to support teaching in your university
- Engagement ¨C what students say about how you¡¯re teaching 바카라사이트m
- Outcomes ¨C what your teaching achieves for your students
- Environment ¨C o바카라사이트r factors, such as 바카라사이트 diversity of your student and staff community, that can have an impact on teaching and learning.
- We conducted a survey of university representatives to examine 바카라사이트 key indicators used for evaluating 바카라사이트 teaching performance of universities in Europe, to get an understanding of 바카라사이트 landscape of available data in each country, and to collect recommendations for potential indicators.
Suggestions included 바카라사이트 research orientation of teaching, income from continuous professional development, 바카라사이트 share of students employed within 12 months of graduation and student retention rates.
However, we knew that we needed to identify performance indicators that were applicable to higher education institutions across 바카라사이트 different national systems and, most importantly, measurable using available data.
The final result was a list of 13 metrics (see pages 28-29) ¨C that range from 바카라사이트 number of staff per student (does a university have enough teachers to teach effectively?) to 바카라사이트 gender balance of staff and students (does 바카라사이트 institution provide a diverse and inclusive environment?) ¨C that aims to show which European universities provide 바카라사이트 best learning environment for students.?
