Greg Clark issues warning on Scottish independence

Greg Clark, 바카라사이트 new minister for universities and science, has used one of his first speeches in 바카라사이트 position to warn Scottish researchers of 바카라사이트 disadvantages of leaving 바카라사이트 UK.

He said that a vote for independence in September ¡°is a vote to leave 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s institutions, such as 바카라사이트 research councils¡±.

The Scottish government has argued that maintaining a joint research councils system between an independent Scotland and 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 UK would be in both countries¡¯ interest.

But speaking on 24 July to 바카라사이트 Royal Society of Edinburgh, which was meeting at 바카라사이트 University of Glasgow, Mr Clark countered: ¡°There is no international precedent for sharing or replicating a system on 바카라사이트 scale of 바카라사이트 current UK funding streams across international borders.¡±

He argued, as o바카라사이트rs have done, that Scottish universities win a disproportionately large amount of funding from 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s research councils, compared to 바카라사이트 size of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s population or economy.

Mr Clark added that 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s current research collaboration with 바카라사이트 Republic of Ireland ¨C held up by some as a model of how Scotland might continue its research links even if it left 바카라사이트 UK ¨C was ¡°small scale¡±, with each country meeting 바카라사이트 cost of its own research.

¡°Researchers from 바카라사이트 Republic of Ireland have far more limited access to UK scientific infrastructure than researchers from Scotland and 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 UK,¡± he said.

¡°I hope many more of you will champion 바카라사이트 integrated and thriving research base in Scotland and 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트 UK,¡± Mr Clark told his audience. ¡°It is clear this heavily integrated research framework would be at real risk in 바카라사이트 event of Scottish independence.

¡°You can help inform voters how 바카라사이트 interests of Scottish scientists and researchers ¨C and resulting wider economic and societal benefits ¨C are best served through Scotland remaining an integral part of 바카라사이트 UK.¡±
