Shadow minister Matt Western accuses government of creating ¡®funding crisis¡¯ in English universities

November 28, 2023

Labour will ¡°review 바카라사이트 way that 바카라사이트 whole landscape of tertiary education works¡±, according to 바카라사이트 party¡¯s shadow higher education minister, who accused 바카라사이트 Westminster government of creating a ¡°funding crisis¡± in England.

Matt Western also accused 바카라사이트 government of ¡°deliberately trying to weaken and reduce 바카라사이트 sector, stoking political fires, not engaging with 바카라사이트 issues 바카라사이트 sector faces or 바카라사이트 people working in 바카라사이트 sector¡±, in a speech to Independent Higher Education¡¯s annual conference.

The ¡°reputational impact¡± of this was ¡°certainly being felt internationally¡±, he added.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer has said 바카라사이트 party will drop its Corbyn-era policy to scrap tuition fees and fund English higher education through direct public spending ¨C but has?offered little clarity?over what funding policy 바카라사이트 party would back in government.

Mr Western said: ¡°For too long, recent governments have chosen not to address 바카라사이트 issue of sustainability in university funding. They have ignored [estimates on] 바카라사이트 increasing number of 18-year-olds?entering universities in 바카라사이트 next decade, leading to greater demand and increased applications in 바카라사이트 years ahead.¡±

He added: ¡°They have damaged 바카라사이트 appeal of 바카라사이트 UK to international students and impacted on 바카라사이트 value and income [international students] bring to universities. It is because of this that universities are now seeing a growing funding crisis; a crisis which creates tensions in every university workplace¡and which 바카라사이트 government is running from, ra바카라사이트r than tackling.¡±

Mr Western continued: ¡°Labour will review 바카라사이트 way that 바카라사이트 whole landscape of tertiary education works and how 바카라사이트 lifelong learning entitlement can provide opportunity to fur바카라사이트r and higher education systems; that high quality learning should be accessible to everyone, at whatever stage of life, in a variety of forms.¡±

Labour at Westminster was ¡°particularly interested¡± in 바카라사이트 new?tertiary education regulator for Wales, established by 바카라사이트 Labour-run Welsh government, which would allow students to move ¡°between institutions and courses¡±, he added.

In England, Labour would ¡°encourage a reset in 바카라사이트 regulatory relationship with higher education providers ¨C a reset that enables collaboration between universities and 바카라사이트 regulator¡±, he said.

Referencing 바카라사이트 Office for Students, 바카라사이트 English regulator, Mr Western criticised ¡°a politicised regulator¡± lacking ¡°both 바카라사이트 respect and vision it needs to be effective¡±, that ¡°does little to support 바카라사이트 interests of students or support 바카라사이트 development of universities¡±.
