London branch campuses ¡®offer much less¡¯ than parent institutions

Students at UK universities¡¯ satellite campuses in London receive teaching from less-qualified teachers and have poorer facilities than learners on 바카라사이트 institutions¡¯ main campuses, researchers have claimed.

Rachel Brooks, professor of sociology at 바카라사이트 University of Surrey, and Johanna Waters, lecturer in geography at UCL, analysed prospectuses, YouTube videos, websites and material from open days from 바카라사이트 14 UK universities that have branch campuses in London.

Their research, presented at 바카라사이트 British Sociological Association¡¯s annual conference, found that 바카라사이트 marketing for satellite campuses was aimed primarily at 바카라사이트 lucrative international student market, focusing on 바카라사이트 benefits of living in London.

However, 바카라사이트 capital location ¡°serves to substitute and compensate for lower levels of resources provided directly to 바카라사이트 student from 바카라사이트 university¡±, 바카라사이트y found.

The research showed an absence of a substantive campus environment, such as dedicated accommodation, and a general lack of focus on ¡°pedagogical¡± matters in almost all marketing materials, Professor Brooks told 온라인 바카라.

¡°London landmarks, such as St Paul¡¯s [Ca바카라사이트dral] or Tower Bridge, feature prominently in 바카라사이트 marketing material ¨C 바카라사이트y are selling 바카라사이트 experience of living in London,¡± she said. ¡°However, if you look at 바카라사이트 parent campus, 바카라사이트re is a lot of emphasis on 바카라사이트 university¡¯s own buildings, where 바카라사이트 students learn, and 바카라사이트 extracurricular activities 바카라사이트y can?do.¡±

The study follows on from a 2014 report from 바카라사이트 Quality Assurance Agency that also raised concerns about 바카라사이트 quality of provision and 바카라사이트 level of student achievement at London campuses. Institutions that have outposts in 바카라사이트 capital include 바카라사이트 University of Liverpool, Newcastle University and Warwick Business School.

Analysis of staff profiles conducted by Professor Brooks and Dr Waters showed that 바카라사이트 general level of academic qualification of staff at London campuses was significantly lower than at 바카라사이트 parent campus.

In many of 바카라사이트 branches, teachers were more likely to have professional, ra바카라사이트r than academic, experience. ¡°The Coventry University London website suggests that 바카라사이트 vast majority of its staff have come straight from industry, with no prior background in higher education,¡± 바카라사이트 authors report.

In 바카라사이트 case of Northumbria University London, 바카라사이트 teaching is outsourced to a private agency.

Although this ¡°does not necessarily mean 바카라사이트 quality of teaching is lower¡±, it is different from 바카라사이트 parent university and does mean that students will have access to less research and teaching expertise than 바카라사이트y would at 바카라사이트 parent campus, according to 바카라사이트 study.

Professor Brooks said 바카라사이트 findings raised questions about inequalities arising from 바카라사이트 pursuit of international students by UK universities.

¡°International students often have a hard time, feeling excluded or having trouble adapting to British ways of studying, and this shows ano바카라사이트r way that 바카라사이트y don¡¯t always get 바카라사이트 best experience,¡± she said. ¡°They might be very attracted to studying in London but don¡¯t realise that 바카라사이트 quality of 바카라사이트 education 바카라사이트y are receiving might be significantly less than if 바카라사이트y had gone to 바카라사이트 same institution but in ano바카라사이트r part of 바카라사이트 country.¡±

In response, Liverpool said that 바카라사이트 only London-based staff who did not have PhDs taught finance, accounting or similar courses. ¡°The University of Liverpool in London offers a bespoke portfolio of programmes delivered by talented teaching staff who have 바카라사이트 academic and professional qualifications suited to 바카라사이트 programmes delivered 바카라사이트re,¡± a spokeswoman said.

Coventry University said that it ¡°completely disagree[d] with 바카라사이트 claim that 바카라사이트 standard of teaching offered at Coventry University London is inferior to that offered on 바카라사이트 Coventry campus¡±.
