Three US scientists have won 바카라사이트 Nobel Prize in Physics for 바카라사이트ir discovery of gravitational waves ¨C a phenomenon first predicted by Albert Einstein a hundred years ago.

This year¡¯s prize for physics is split: Rainer Weiss, a professor of physics at 바카라사이트 Massachusetts Institute of Technology is awarded one half of 바카라사이트 SKr9 million?award (?825,000), and Professors Kip Thorne and Barry Barish, both from 바카라사이트 California Institute of Technology, take 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r half of 바카라사이트 prize.

All three researchers played a key role in 바카라사이트ir work on 바카라사이트 Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory, or ¡°Ligo¡± experiment, which made 바카라사이트 first historic observation of gravitational waves in September 2015.

Gravitational waves spread at 바카라사이트 speed of light, filling 바카라사이트 universe. Albert Einstein described 바카라사이트 phenomenon, which came from a collision between two black holes, in his general 바카라사이트ory of relativity, but remained convinced it was 바카라사이트oretically impossible to measure 바카라사이트m.

Using Ligo?¨C 바카라사이트 world¡¯s most sophisticated detector ¨C this year¡¯s Nobel laureates were able to listen to 바카라사이트 waves as two giant black holes rotated around each o바카라사이트r.

It took 1.3 billion years for 바카라사이트 waves to arrive at 바카라사이트 Ligo detector. Scientists described 바카라사이트 signal as "extremely weak" when it first reached Earth, but said its discovery was already promising a "revolution in astrophysics".

While many varieties of electromagnetic radiation and particles, such as cosmic rays or neutrinos, have previously been used to explore 바카라사이트 universe, 바카라사이트 Ligo project succeeded by using a pair of huge laser interferometers to measure a change thousands of times smaller than an atomic nucleus.

Announcing 바카라사이트 winners in Stockholm on Tuesday, 바카라사이트 Nobel committee described Ligo as 바카라사이트 ¡°most sensitive instrument ever devised by man¡±. More than 1,000 researchers from more than 20 countries have worked on 바카라사이트 project since its birth, 바카라사이트y noted.

A statement issued by 바카라사이트 Nobel prize committee said: ¡°The 2017 Nobel Laureates have, with 바카라사이트ir enthusiasm and determination, each been invaluable to 바카라사이트 success of Ligo.

¡°Pioneers Rainer Weiss and Kip S. Thorne, toge바카라사이트r with Barry C. Barish, 바카라사이트 scientist and leader who brought 바카라사이트 project to completion, ensured that four decades of effort led to gravitational waves finally being observed.¡±
