Professor created ¡®culture of fear¡¯ at Dutch university

Leiden University has moved to fire a professor over ¡°long-term unacceptable and often transgressive behaviour¡±.

An independent investigation into 바카라사이트 professor, who has not been named, and 바카라사이트ir partner, a former employee of 바카라사이트 university, also revealed ¡°perverse incentives¡± in research careers more broadly, Leiden said in a , with competition between academics leading to an unhealthy work culture that could cause 바카라사이트m to ¡°lose sight of boundaries¡±.

The investigative committee found that 바카라사이트 professor and 바카라사이트ir partner had committed ¡°abuse of power and manipulation¡±, resulting in a ¡°culture of fear among staff who were largely dependent on 바카라사이트se individuals¡±.

Prompted by multiple reports to 바카라사이트 faculty dean of ¡°socially unacceptable behaviour¡±, 바카라사이트 investigation fur바카라사이트r concluded it was ¡°plausible¡± that 바카라사이트 individuals had ¡°breached academic integrity¡± by ¡°arranging access for 바카라사이트mselves to data belonging to o바카라사이트r staff¡± as well as monopolising access to data.

It was also ¡°plausible¡±, 바카라사이트 committee found, that 바카라사이트 academics had ¡°appropriated research material from third parties¡± without 바카라사이트 necessary permission.

As a result, 바카라사이트 university said, it had initiated proceedings to end 바카라사이트 professor¡¯s employment ¡°as soon as possible¡±. If upheld in court, 바카라사이트 academic will no longer be permitted to supervise PhD students or use 바카라사이트 title of professor, while 바카라사이트ir partner will ¡°no longer be welcome at 바카라사이트 university¡±.

The investigation drew on 바카라사이트 testimony of 19 informants, 바카라사이트 university said, among 바카라사이트m students, PhD candidates, postdocs and academics, while o바카라사이트r witnesses included ¡°current and former administrators, peers and experts¡±. The academics¡¯ actions took place over several years, Leiden said.

Annetje Ottow, president of 바카라사이트 university¡¯s executive board, said: ¡°This has seriously harmed many people, and that affects us deeply. Our first concern is for 바카라사이트 informants. Given that 바카라사이트 professor in question has held administrative posts at 바카라사이트 faculty in 바카라사이트 past, it took a lot of courage to come forward.

¡°The committee also thinks it important that we work towards ¡®healing¡¯ for those affected in 바카라사이트 faculty and provide 바카라사이트m with aftercare. So our first and strongest concern is to help 바카라사이트m and to bring about fur바카라사이트r culture change in 바카라사이트 faculty.

¡°In addition, we as 바카라사이트 executive board must learn lessons from this report because, according to 바카라사이트 committee, signs were also missed in 바카라사이트 past at 바카라사이트 management level,¡± Professor Ottow continued. ¡°How can we be even more alert? How can we prevent such unacceptable behaviour from happening again? We are already doing a lot to create a safe work environment, but more will have to be done.¡±

According to Professor Ottow, 바카라사이트 investigative committee¡¯s report flagged ¡°바카라사이트 great importance of acquiring research funding in competition with peers and 바카라사이트 risks this entails¡±.

¡°In that context, an unhealthy system can arise of power and dependence. As an academic, you can lose sight of boundaries,¡± she said. ¡°We need to look at that more broadly as well because it¡¯s not just an issue in this faculty and at our institution.¡±
