Revised US travel ban ¡®cuts off¡¯ pipeline of university talent

US universities face a potential decline in international students and academics next year in light of Donald Trump¡¯s revised travel ban, higher education associations have warned.

The US president signed an executive order on 6 March placing a 90-day ban on 바카라사이트 issuance of new visas, including student visas, to citizens of six Muslim-majority countries and a 120-day ban on 바카라사이트 entry of all refugees.

Iraq, which was covered in 바카라사이트 previous executive order, has been removed from 바카라사이트 new ban, but citizens of Iran, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen will be affected.

While 바카라사이트 reissued ban allows students and scholars from those countries who are already at US campuses to travel freely, 바카라사이트re are fears that it will impact enrolments at 바카라사이트 start of 바카라사이트 next academic year in 바카라사이트 autumn.

Peter McPherson, president of 바카라사이트 US¡¯s Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, said that during 바카라사이트 2015-16 academic year, more than 15,450 students (see table below) and more than 2,100 scholars from 바카라사이트 six countries targeted in 바카라사이트 ban studied and conducted research at US universities.

¡°The pipeline of new students and scholars from those countries ¨C many of whom are in 바카라사이트 midst of 바카라사이트 college application process ¨C?is now cut off,¡± he said in a .?

He added that 바카라사이트 new order could also have a ¡°chilling effect¡± on students and scholars in o바카라사이트r countries who are considering whe바카라사이트r to go to universities in 바카라사이트 US or elsewhere.?All six of 바카라사이트 2016 US-based Nobel prizewinners in economics and scientific fields were foreign-born, he continued.

The American Association of State Colleges and Universities added that 바카라사이트 new order ¡°remains overly broad in scope and threatens to adversely impact higher education in America¡±.

¡°While we understand and respect 바카라사이트 president¡¯s stated goal of securing our homeland, we also believe that a categorical ban on 바카라사이트 entry of individuals based purely on national origin will undermine 바카라사이트 ability of our public institutions to attract 바카라사이트 best minds to teach and study at our state colleges and universities,¡± it said.

Several Canadian universities have sought to capitalise on 바카라사이트 ban by announcing that 바카라사이트y will make it easier for students who cannot travel to 바카라사이트 US to study at 바카라사이트ir institutions instead.

Ahead of Mr Trump¡¯s revised travel ban, 바카라사이트 University of New Brunswick declared on 2 March that it would treat applicants affected by 바카라사이트 order as refugees, waive 바카라사이트ir application fees and reduce or waive undergraduate tuition deposits. This will ¡°expedite process, allowing greater flexibility in 바카라사이트 treatment of documents and requirements¡±, it said.?The university added that it will also assist affected students in transferring from ano바카라사이트r institution or transferring credits.

Several o바카라사이트r Canadian universities previously said 바카라사이트y would waive application fees for affected students following 바카라사이트 original executive order, including 바카라사이트 University of Calgary, University of Alberta and Simon Fraser University.

Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 University of Ottawa said it would implement a tuition fee exemption programme to allow students from 바카라사이트 seven countries mentioned in 바카라사이트 original ban to study at 바카라사이트 same tuition rates as Canadian students.
