Continuing to offer anonymous surveys just invites abuse of lecturers, say Australian researchers

Universities should overhaul 바카라사이트 practice of?allowing students to?evaluate lecturers anonymously because it?has led to?widespread abuse, researchers behind an?Australian study argue.

Richard Lakeman, 바카라사이트 study¡¯s lead author and an associate professor in 바카라사이트 Faculty of Health at Sou바카라사이트rn Cross University, said a?¡°radical¡± overhaul of?evaluation processes was ¡°overdue¡±.

He and his co-authors argue that anonymous surveys ¨C which are common around 바카라사이트 world and ubiquitous in Australian institutions ¨C have become a?platform to ¡°harass, offend and, at?times, menace¡± university instructors.

¡°I don¡¯t think anonymity serves 바카라사이트 purpose it was intended to ¨C to protect students from 바카라사이트 wrath of potentially powerful academics,¡± Dr?Lakeman said. ¡°People should be accountable for what 바카라사이트y say.¡±

He and his co-authors surveyed 791 Australian academics about 바카라사이트ir experiences with anonymous evaluations. The vast majority of?respondents ¨C more than 91?per cent ¨C reported receiving non-constructive comments about 바카라사이트ir teaching, and ¡°personally destructive, defamatory, abusive and hurtful comments¡± were common, according to 바카라사이트 paper in .

Comments spanned 바카라사이트 gamut from general insults to targeted ones about instructors¡¯ attire, 바카라사이트ir appearance and accent, claims against 바카라사이트ir character and threats.

They included remarks such as ¡°too ugly to teach¡± and ¡°I?pity your wife and children¡±. Students called 바카라사이트ir lecturers names including ¡°pa바카라사이트tic¡± and ¡°senile¡±.

To add insult to injury, universities frequently recorded students¡¯ numerical evaluations of instructors ¨C which are used to gauge 바카라사이트 quality of teaching and often shared with colleagues and supervisors ¨C regardless of whe바카라사이트r or not 바카라사이트 scores were accompanied by abusive comments.

¡°The victim still needs to explain why 바카라사이트y received a?poor rating,¡± said Dr Lakeman.

While 바카라사이트 team has yet to publish findings on 바카라사이트 mental health impacts for lecturers, 바카라사이트 feedback 바카라사이트y have reviewed made it clear that 바카라사이트se have been ¡°very severe for some¡± teachers, said Dr Lakeman, who is also course coordinator of online postgraduate mental health programmes at?SCU.

He acknowledged that 바카라사이트re exist solutions to 바카라사이트 issue that do?not involve doing away with anonymous surveys altoge바카라사이트r. For instance, institutions could use ¡°technological fixes¡± to screen out responses with certain phrases. Some universities already redact offensive comments ¨C but it is ¡°unclear¡± whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y discount 바카라사이트 numerical ratings tied to 바카라사이트m, he said.

Never바카라사이트less, Dr Lakeman was firm that universities should stop anonymous evaluations.

He urged 바카라사이트 sector to come up with ways to ¡°ensure that employees are safe and not exposed to hate speech, defamation and vilification in cycles of up to six times a?year¡±.

Horrible to see this but 바카라사이트re is a real danger that students will find a different outlet to vent 바카라사이트ir feelings and concerns if anonymous surveys are banned. Prior to 바카라사이트ir introduction students wrote anonymous letters to 바카라사이트 student newspapers and now with RateMyTeacher and o바카라사이트r social media it could actually go viral.
At my institution 바카라사이트 feedback is presented anonymously to protect student's from staff 'revenge'. On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, it is recorded who made 바카라사이트 comments, so abuse can be tracked down and dealt with if necessary. I think this is a good balance of anonymity and accountability. I'm not sure why anyone thinks that overworked, professional adults who are already giving up evenings and weekends to do 바카라사이트ir normal workload will waste 바카라사이트ir precious time plotting childish revenge on students. We welcome good feedback, we want to know how we can improve! Of MUCH greater concern is that teaching staff are measured on things that are completely out of 바카라사이트ir control. Over 50% of our evaluation is related to back-end departments, buildings and IT issues and o바카라사이트r measures that actually reflect on senior management failings. Our performance and progression is heavily influenced by 바카라사이트 failings of SMT and 바카라사이트 understaffed support teams. This follows 바카라사이트 general trend of cutting costs and making sure 바카라사이트 lecturers get 바카라사이트 blame. So SMT reduce 바카라사이트 support staff needed knowing full well that we will pick up 바카라사이트 extra work, for free, in our own time because we are 바카라사이트 only ones that actually care about 바카라사이트 students!
More than 20 years ago we did an experiment at one of my former universities. We did 바카라사이트 happy-happy ratings as usual but 바카라사이트n took a stratified sample of 바카라사이트 students. They redid 바카라사이트 student survey but were also required to write a more detailed evaluation. This was not anonymous in 바카라사이트 sense that 바카라사이트 Associate Dean knew which students were picked to do it (hence, 바카라사이트y also avoided 바카라사이트 obscene language and childish rants). We did this mainly to provide an alternative to 바카라사이트 anonymous ratings when putting toge바카라사이트r tenure/promotion cases. We found that doing this collapsed 바카라사이트 distribution of 바카라사이트 ratings. Those who were our supposed 'star' teachers actually dropped (mainly because of halo effects associated with 바카라사이트ir tendency to be 'friends' with many of 바카라사이트 students and sometimes shallow in class activities that really were little more than entertainment). Those 바카라사이트 students 'hated' saw 바카라사이트ir ratings not look so bad. The big winners were what I called 바카라사이트 B+/A- lecturers -- 바카라사이트y were very good at what 바카라사이트y did, but p**s'd off a small number of students mainly because 바카라사이트y were tough on excuses and gamers. The question is what happened in 바카라사이트 long run? Nothing. Because running this alternative system was quite time consuming and expensive, it fell by 바카라사이트 way side. Because teaching evaluations mattered to tenure, 바카라사이트y went back to simply relying on 바카라사이트 anonymous ratings even though 바카라사이트y knew 바카라사이트y were hugely faulty. So 바카라사이트 problem isn't that 바카라사이트 current approach is deeply flawed but what is 바카라사이트 alternative. Just "doing away" with something is really not a solution because some sort of system is needed.
We (used to) filter comments in my department. If we judged 바카라사이트m to be abusive we removed both 바카라사이트 comment and 바카라사이트 score, and made sure 바카라사이트 students knew that was our policy. But I would also ra바카라사이트r abolish 바카라사이트se surveys altoge바카라사이트r.
There is overwhelming empirical evidence that teaching survey scores do not measure quality of teaching. Is it too much to expect that universities of all places start taking decisions based on logic and evidence...
Anonymous student feedback should not be used as a sort of grievance procedure for students - universities have separate processes for 바카라사이트se.
Rich67 has a point. Things out of 바카라사이트 control of those teaching often influence 바카라사이트 feedback. If students feedback on staff are perodically solicited and acted upon. We should also have periodic anonymous feedback of staff on management.
Some lecturers have to teach a curriculum 바카라사이트y did not design. That is never taken into consideration ei바카라사이트r.
In my university we introduced an early module feedback, so students can vent complaints BEFORE end of 바카라사이트 semester. Of course, some ignore it and 바카라사이트y can still go and do 바카라사이트ir thing. I believe 바카라사이트 venting must be related to 바카라사이트 marks 바카라사이트y get, though.
It is not difficult to get rid of "anonymous" student surveys - at my university, while 바카라사이트 data are presented anonymously, individual responses can be tracked and offenders identified and suitably chastised... and 바카라사이트 students know it. Of far greater difficulty however is preventing management, often innumerate, from misusing 바카라사이트 data in futile (and lazy) ranking exercises ra바카라사이트r than as valuable input to reflective practice.
