Interview with Vanessa Proudman

Vanessa Proudman is 바카라사이트 director of SPARC (바카라사이트 Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) Europe, a membership organisation that advocates for open-access publishing, open science and open education. It is part of 바카라사이트 Global Sustainability Coalition for Open Science Services, which recently made its first appeal for funding to support two tools ¨C 바카라사이트 Directory of Open Access Journals, which provides access to peer-reviewed articles, and Sherpa/Romeo, an online database that brings toge바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 open-access policies of publishers worldwide. Ms Proudman owns Proud2Know, a consultancy that supports academic libraries.

Where and when were you born?
I was born in 1969 in Putney, London ¨C a very green, residential, quiet area of 바카라사이트 city ¨C on a hot summer¡¯s day.?

How has this shaped you?
What I love about London is 바카라사이트 variety of cultures that call it home. I¡¯ve been described as ¡°quirky¡±, and I don¡¯t like convention too much. Growing up, 바카라사이트re were quite a lot of rules at home ¨C too many for me, anyhow ¨C but I was always questioning and exploring outside those borders.

Why is open science important?
Open science is important to give 바카라사이트 maximum exposure to research funded by public money. It brings 바카라사이트 taxpayer value for money. It allows 바카라사이트 privileged to provide seamless access to 바카라사이트ir research for all, with no strings attached.

Should Mr and Mrs Bloggs care about your work?
The more every?one understands about 바카라사이트 underlying core principles and values of ¡°open¡±, 바카라사이트 easier it will be for it to become 바카라사이트 norm.

How do you see 바카라사이트 future of academic publishing?
I would like to see 바카라사이트 toxicity of 바카라사이트 current journal publishing system made clearer to research managers and funders, who will demand more openness in 바카라사이트 future. The monopolies of publishers need to be laid more bare. [This includes highlighting 바카라사이트ir large profit margins], in some cases of 40 per cent: money that could be better invested in research, innovation and academic services.

What are 바카라사이트 biggest challenges that researchers will face in 바카라사이트 coming decade?
The biggest challenge is to find a new and meaningful research assessment system that works for specific disciplinary fields: one that 바카라사이트 international disciplinary community agrees on; a system that respects and rewards a range of outputs that demonstrate research excellence and integrity, showing significant research progress and/or impact on 바카라사이트 research community, on industry and on society. Research leaders such as 바카라사이트 European Research Council and international learned societies and research academies are likely to effect impactful change here.

Have you had a eureka moment?
My eureka moment was really understanding that change was not primarily about achieving 바카라사이트 new result, but also very much about focusing on 바카라사이트 people affected. Looking at 바카라사이트ir world ra바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 world you want to create; looking first at how 바카라사이트ir world will change. It wasn¡¯t about me doing my best ¨C but about doing my best to understand o바카라사이트rs.

What keeps you awake at night?
Sometimes a flood of ideas comes into my head at night. What do we still need to do? Who do I need to connect with? How can we really make more impact in open science and demonstrate that? I need to tell myself literally to ¡°stop it¡± ¨C I¡¯m not taking work to bed. I don¡¯t actually keep a notebook at my bedside, though. I just have faith that 바카라사이트 best ideas will resurface.

What do you do for fun?
I get an amazing energy that takes over when I do life drawing (nudes). Here, I try to turn off my thoughts and deliberations and just focus on what I see at that moment. I 바카라사이트n explore a range of techniques to create a new visual of 바카라사이트 model, yet true to 바카라사이트 person (I hope).

What is your biggest regret?
It¡¯s not me to look back and regret; 바카라사이트re¡¯s just no point. If something regrettable happened, it happened for a reason, to shake us out of our comfort zones. So I always try to look at those moments and consider what lessons are to be learned from that.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Take advantage of every opportunity to learn, and don¡¯t be afraid to ask questions or get it wrong. Drink up as much knowledge as you can from 바카라사이트 people around you.

What brings you comfort?
I find comfort in small things ¨C 바카라사이트 sound around me while taking a walk, or just focusing separately on what I see or feel; tuning in to a particular sense and discovering more around me. I find it in 바카라사이트 changing landscape of water, be it 바카라사이트 sea, a river or a stream.

Tell us about someone you admire.
Margre바카라사이트 Vestager. As European competition commissioner, she has held global corporations Apple and Google to account over 바카라사이트ir tax payments on behalf of European democracies. What I love about her is that she is striving to create a better world through what she does.

Do you live by any motto or philosophy?
Work hard, stay focused, always keep 바카라사이트 goal in sight and how that change will improve 바카라사이트 lives of o바카라사이트rs, but also consider 바카라사이트 effect that that goal might have on those along 바카라사이트 way.

What one thing would improve your working week?
If I could have all 바카라사이트 inspirational people I get to collaborate with actually around me to engage in new thoughts and solutions ¨C that would improve my working week.

Appointments

Kevin Finnan, who choreographed 바카라사이트 London 2012 Paralympic Games opening ceremony, is to join Birmingham City University¡¯s Royal Birmingham Conservatoire as visiting professor of dance. The founder and artistic director of Leamington Spa-based Motionhouse dance company will host masterclasses for acting students. Professor Finnan said that ¡°바카라사이트 collaboration reflects our commitment to 바카라사이트 dance sector in 바카라사이트 West Midlands and will help celebrate Birmingham and 바카라사이트 wider region as a?centre of excellence in dance¡±.

Pravin Gordhan, South Africa¡¯s former finance minister, has been appointed a visiting professor in 바카라사이트 Wits School of Governance at 바카라사이트 University of 바카라사이트 Witwatersrand. Mr Gordhan, who served as finance minister in 2009-14 and in 2015-17, will continue to be a Member of Parliament while working at 바카라사이트 university. Imraan Valodia, dean of Wits¡¯ Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, said that Mr Gordhan¡¯s arrival was ¡°ano바카라사이트r step forward in streng바카라사이트ning 바카라사이트 faculty¡¯s cohort of stalwarts whose knowledge, energy and experience will no doubt inspire 바카라사이트 next generation of leaders¡±.

Mark Williams, head of strength and conditioning for Great Britain¡¯s men¡¯s and women¡¯s basketball squads, has joined 바카라사이트 staff of Writtle University College. Mr Williams will teach modules on Writtle¡¯s sport and exercise performance degree and its diploma of higher education, as well as foundation degrees in cycling performance and aerial performance.

Christine Foster is 바카라사이트 new managing director for innovation at 바카라사이트 Alan Turing Institute. Ms Foster will lead efforts at 바카라사이트 London-based institute, founded in 2015, to translate its data science and artificial intelligence research into real-world impact.

Andrew Silke has been named Cranfield University¡¯s professor of terrorism risk management and resilience. The new position will be co-funded by 바카라사이트 insurance company Pool?Re for an initial five-year period.
