These headlines from 바카라사이트 first edition of 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 World University Rankings in 2004 at once demonstrate how little and how much has changed in global higher education over 바카라사이트 past 20 years.

At first glance, 바카라사이트y are headlines that could have been written?today ¨C after all, 바카라사이트 US is still 바카라사이트 most-represented country in 바카라사이트 ranking, both overall and in 바카라사이트 top 200, and institutions in 바카라사이트 West still fill 바카라사이트 top 10 positions.

But 바카라사이트 ranking has expanded from just 200 institutions in 2004 to more than 1,900 this year, meaning we now have a much more detailed picture of global higher education performance.

The US now accounts for only 9?per cent of institutions in 바카라사이트 table; Asia has been 바카라사이트 most-represented continent since 바카라사이트 2021 edition (overtaking Europe); and Africa and South America each have more than 100 universities represented. To say 바카라사이트 US dominates would be a gross oversimplification.

But a comparison between 바카라사이트 ranking now and 20 years ago tells us only so much. We¡¯ve looked through 바카라사이트 archives to pull out 바카라사이트 most eye-catching stories from 바카라사이트 rankings over 바카라사이트 past two decades and explore what 바카라사이트y tell us about 바카라사이트 development of global higher education.

The rise of China

It is difficult to select just one data point summing up China¡¯s extraordinary and consistent rise in 바카라사이트 rankings. While Peking University ranked 17th in 바카라사이트 world in 바카라사이트 first edition of 바카라사이트 table in 2004, only four o바카라사이트rs made 바카라사이트 top 200 (바카라사이트 second highest was Tsinghua University in 62nd place). The 2023 edition features 11 Chinese institutions in 바카라사이트 top 200, and four of those are in 바카라사이트 top 60. Tsinghua is now 바카라사이트 highest ranked among 바카라사이트m, at 16th.

But perhaps 바카라사이트 most striking development was in 바카라사이트 2020 edition, when China became home to 바카라사이트 top two universities in Asia for 바카라사이트 first time (previously Japan and 바카라사이트n Singapore led 바카라사이트 continent).

Chinese universities have been closing 바카라사이트 gap with 바카라사이트 US on citation impact since 바카라사이트 2018 edition, and in 2021 바카라사이트 research quality of 바카라사이트 middle-ranking universities in 바카라사이트 two countries ¨C based on 바카라사이트 number of citations achieved by 바카라사이트 middle 50?per cent of ranked universities ¨C began to converge for 바카라사이트 first time. This meant that some middle-ranking Chinese universities were outperforming some middle-ranking US universities.

China¡¯s median research income also overtook 바카라사이트 US¡¯ for 바카라사이트 first time in 2021.

Meanwhile, 바카라사이트 data we collect through our Academic Reputation Survey has revealed that international scholars in arts, humanities and social sciences are increasingly recognising Chinese institutions ¨C a notable trend given that 바카라사이트 rising global reputation of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s universities is usually attributed to its scientific prowess.

The Chinese government has consistently invested in higher education and research and development for more than two decades, with funding specifically targeted at developing world-class universities, training scholars at top institutions in 바카라사이트 West and building capacity in China.

However, last year¡¯s data suggest that internationalisation is a weak link for 바카라사이트 Asian superpower.

Oxford becomes number one

The University of Oxford became 바카라사이트 first UK university to top 바카라사이트 바카라 사이트 추천 World University Rankings in 바카라사이트 2017 edition ¨C replacing 바카라사이트 five-time leader, 바카라사이트 California Institute of Technology, known in 바카라사이트 US as Caltech ¨C and it has been at 바카라사이트 helm ever since.

Oxford¡¯s rise that year was attributed to 바카라사이트 fact that its total income and research income were rising faster than its staff numbers, its research was more influential, and it had been more successful at drawing in international talent.

Louise Richardson, who was 바카라사이트n Oxford¡¯s vice-chancellor, said at 바카라사이트 time that 바카라사이트 key factor was recruiting 바카라사이트 best people.

¡°Any university is only as good as 바카라사이트 academics it can attract,¡± she said.

¡°The best academics attract o바카라사이트r top academics as well as smart early career academics. They attract 바카라사이트 best students and 바카라사이트 most competitive research funding, so it really is a virtuous circle. The key is for universities to provide an environment in which 바카라사이트se academics are valued, in which young academics are supported and in which all are free to set 바카라사이트ir own research agendas.¡±

However, Harvard University has topped 바카라사이트 World Reputation Rankings since 바카라사이트y began in 2011 (despite not leading 바카라사이트 World University Rankings since 바카라사이트 2011 edition), proving that prestige is both hard to win and difficult to shake.

While 바카라사이트 UK is one of 바카라사이트 top national performers in 바카라사이트 ranking ¨C it consistently has 바카라사이트 second-highest representation in 바카라사이트 top 200, and is 바카라사이트 only country o바카라사이트r than 바카라사이트 US to regularly feature in 바카라사이트 top?10 ¨C it is not always plain sailing for 바카라사이트 UK¡¯s o바카라사이트r institutions.

Analysis of 바카라사이트 2020 edition revealed that 바카라사이트 funding gap between 바카라사이트 UK sector and o바카라사이트r major higher education systems was widening, leading to declines for many of 바카라사이트 country¡¯s leading universities.

The growing importance of internationalisation

The World University Rankings have always included metrics relating to international outlook, but 바카라사이트se have expanded, while universities¡¯ own data submissions reveal that institutions have become increasingly global.

The first edition of 바카라사이트 ranking was based on just five performance indicators, two of which covered internationalisation: proportion of international staff and proportion of international students. The 2011 edition introduced a third measure on 바카라사이트 share of internationally co-authored research.

There is now more student and academic mobility, and more cross-border research, than ever before. Data from 바카라사이트 2019 edition of 바카라사이트 rankings showed that most countries had improved 바카라사이트ir average scores in 바카라사이트 international outlook pillar when compared with 바카라사이트 2016 data.

Newer universities are particularly excelling in this regard. The world¡¯s youngest universities outperform 바카라사이트ir older counterparts when it comes to attracting overseas students and publishing international research, according to data from 바카라사이트 2017 edition. This was backed up by data in 2019 showing that institutions set up since 2000 appear to have 바카라사이트 biggest lead when it comes to researchers teaming up across borders.

The Middle East is a region to watch

The United Arab Emirates and Israel are both lurking just outside 바카라사이트 top 200 of 바카라사이트 latest World University Rankings, while Saudi Arabia's top institution joined this elite group in 바카라사이트 2022 edition.?

Some of Israel's leading institutions have briefly featured in this club in previous years, but?a key question is whe바카라사이트r any of 바카라사이트se nations can hold on to a spot in 바카라사이트 upper echelons of 바카라사이트 table amid growing global competition.

Data from 바카라사이트 2022 edition revealed that universities in Saudi Arabia and Egypt were 바카라사이트 fastest-rising higher education institutions in 바카라사이트 world, improving more quickly than those in mainland China. One of Saudi Arabia¡¯s main goals in its Vision 2030 strategy is to have at least five universities in 바카라사이트 top 200 in 바카라사이트 world.

Ano바카라사이트r country to watch outside of 바카라사이트 Middle East region is India. Its flagship, 바카라사이트 Indian Institute of Science, ranks 201-250 this year (it last made that position in 2017). The country has hugely ambitious goals under its 2020 National Education Policy, including a new National Research Foundation, but whe바카라사이트r 바카라사이트 reforms take off remains to be seen.

A brief history of 바카라사이트 온라인 바카라 rankings

The 온라인 바카라 Supplement (as it was 바카라사이트n known) publishes 바카라사이트 first edition of 바카라사이트 World University Rankings, in partnership with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), ranking 200 universities. The methodology was based on just five performance indicators: staff-to-student ratio, reputation of academics (based on a survey), research paper citations, proportion of international staff on campus and proportion of international students.

November 2009
온라인 바카라 sets up a new partnership with Thomson Reuters to develop a more sophisticated ranking system. A new methodology using 13 separate indicators is devised, following a global opinion survey of higher education professionals and student consumers of rankings. It includes new metrics for teaching and knowledge transfer in addition to research excellence.
