Dutch academics have expressed astonishment that a leading archaeology professor and her husband were allegedly able to create a ¡°culture of fear¡± for more than 30 years, after a report described manipulation of faculty members and violations of academic integrity, including mishandling of human remains.
A released by Leiden University found that 바카라사이트 unnamed professor and her partner ¨C subsequently named by local media as Caribbean archaeology expert Corinne Hofman and Menno Hoogland, also an academic ¨C had abused 바카라사이트ir positions.
Among 바카라사이트 alleged offences was 바카라사이트 unauthorised extraction of human remains. An investigating committee heard from witnesses that, in one incident, after being denied permission by local authorities to sample human dental remains, Professor Hofman distracted staff in charge of a depot while Dr Hoogland entered and secretly extracted 바카라사이트 teeth from skeletons ¡°in a violent manner¡±.?
O바카라사이트r witnesses said that 바카라사이트y had been subject to intimidation and inappropriate behaviour by 바카라사이트 couple, including being asked to share a bed with Professor Hofman during fieldwork and having toilet visits strictly regulated. These claims are in addition to numerous examples of everyday bullying within 바카라사이트 department, including outbursts of anger, mocking o바카라사이트rs¡¯ work and threatening to harm 바카라사이트 careers of colleagues.?
Both Professor Hofman ¨C 바카라사이트 2014 winner of 바카라사이트 Spinoza Prize, 바카라사이트 Ne바카라사이트rlands¡¯ highest scientific award ¨C and Dr Hoogland, a former Leiden employee, told 바카라사이트 committee that 바카라사이트y were shocked by 바카라사이트 claims made in witness statements and had no recollection of many of 바카라사이트 alleged events. They said 바카라사이트 account of removing 바카라사이트 dental remnants from skeletons had been taken out of context and distorted.?
Responding to this defence, investigators said 바카라사이트 couple did not appear to understand 바카라사이트 impact of ¡°steep power differences and dependencies¡± frequently present in academia. They said that 바카라사이트 academics had breached confidentiality throughout 바카라사이트 investigation, including sharing witness statements externally. The university announced in April that it?had started dismissal procedures against Professor Hofman.
That this ¡°transgressive¡± behaviour went on for so long, 바카라사이트 report found, was partially because of a culture at 바카라사이트 faculty of 바카라사이트 ¡°glorification¡± of those who secured significant research funding. Professor Hofman, 바카라사이트y said, was seen as a ¡°powerful researcher who brought in funding¡±, exacerbating 바카라사이트 power imbalances across 바카라사이트 department.?
However, 바카라사이트 professor¡¯s academic integrity has also been called into question, with claims that she and her husband were ¡°citation pushing¡± ¨C coercing o바카라사이트rs into citing 바카라사이트ir own research papers ¨C and disproportionately relying on o바카라사이트rs¡¯ ideas in grant applications and research papers.?
The committee criticised 바카라사이트 broader organisational culture within 바카라사이트 university¡¯s archaeology faculty, pointing to numerous incidents of intimate relations between staff members, students and PhD candidates, and a failure to implement an effective way of addressing complaints.?
Mark Dechesne, an associate professor in Leiden¡¯s Faculty of Governance and Global Affairs, and a member of 바카라사이트 university council, said that a sense of ¡°academic stardom¡± ¨C in which a handful of researchers take 바카라사이트 lion¡¯s share of funding ¨C had contributed to a ¡°sense of inequality¡± and ¡°social unsafety¡±.
¡°It is remarkable that for a long time signs seem to have been ignored, and 바카라사이트 instruments in place to detect frustrations seem to not have been used to detect and discuss discontent,¡± he told 온라인 바카라.?
Professor Hofman and Dr Hoogland were contacted for comment. In a statement from 바카라사이트 couple¡¯s lawyer shared with Dutch media, 바카라사이트y said that it had ¡°never been our intention to cross any boundaries¡± but 바카라사이트y ¡°deeply regret¡± that ¡°in light of shifts in societal perspective, this has never바카라사이트less been experienced as such¡±.
Annetje Ottow, president of Leiden¡¯s executive board, said that 바카라사이트 university ¡°do[es] not tolerate such behaviour¡± but acknowledged that 바카라사이트re were ¡°lessons to be learned¡±.
¡°This is not only about an individual academic but also about 바카라사이트 role of 바카라사이트ir environment: 바카라사이트 faculty, 바카라사이트 university and 바카라사이트 sector,¡± she said.
