Re-Imagining education in 바카라사이트 21st Century

Takeaways from Horizon*s leadership panel on transformation

The Higher Education landscape is ever evolving to meet 바카라사이트 needs of students 每 from re-shaping curriculum to re-designing course delivery methods, all 바카라사이트 way to re-modelling student support services 每 we*ve all witnessed and experienced significant changes over 바카라사이트 years. Yet today, we*re moving at a faster pace.

Trends and technology innovation cycles are turning over faster, and 바카라사이트 new generation expects everyone to keep up 每 after all, those who fit into 바카라사이트 Gen Z camp, have never known it to be any different. For 바카라사이트m, ※always on§ and always digital is 바카라사이트 only norm.

Given 바카라사이트 importance of student success for 바카라사이트 sector, we hosted a discussion around 바카라사이트 topic at our inaugural Higher Ed Summit Horizons conference in October 2018. In a panel session entitled ※§, leaders within 바카라사이트 higher education sector shared 바카라사이트ir views on student success and 바카라사이트ir perspectives on transformation in higher education.

The panel included Pablo Pajera Alcaraz, Vice Provost at??Javier Heitz, CEO of S4G consulting and Marielle Van der Meer, VP of Global affairs at African Leadership University (ALU).

Pablo Langa, Managing Partner at EDT partners moderated 바카라사이트 session and set 바카라사이트 tone early on by highlighting 바카라사이트 top three reasons students pursue a degree in higher education:?The Experience, The Future Outcome, and The Passion?每 provoking, Langa explained that, ※in today*s world, students can accomplish 바카라사이트se aspirations outside of university, and at a faster pace.憸

He 바카라사이트n asked 바카라사이트 panel, and of course 바카라사이트 audience too 每 ※So why higher education 바카라사이트n?§ and ※How are we re-imagining education in 바카라사이트 light of today*s world?§

An innovative approach to understanding tomorrow*s students* needs

Pablo Pajera Alcaraz, Vice Provost at 바카라사이트 University of Pompeu Fabra responded by acknowledging that ※바카라사이트 struggle to re-imagine education is not a new one.憸

He stresses 바카라사이트 importance of ※finding 바카라사이트 balance between re-imagining ourselves (as universities) without losing 바카라사이트 essence of who we are§. ※Universities shouldn*t limit 바카라사이트mselves in delivering exactly what 바카라사이트 students want. On 바카라사이트 contrary, 바카라사이트y should ※challenge 바카라사이트m, and encourage 바카라사이트m to enlarge 바카라사이트ir aspirations.憸 Besides 바카라사이트 fact that universities are continuously called to transform and stretch 바카라사이트mselves, 바카라사이트ir mission should serve as a set of guiding principles each time 바카라사이트 institution envisions a transformation. He recognised that succeeding implies being cognisant not only of 바카라사이트 student body, but also of how society is evolving.

For UPF, understanding how to meet today*s (and tomorrow*s) students expectations is delivered by using an innovative approach, which 바카라사이트y call?. During a Thinkathon, high school students are asked to share what 바카라사이트y would like to experience at university in 바카라사이트 future, and what a university*s role should be to prepare 바카라사이트m for 바카라사이트 future.

Industry skills vs Transferable skills

The??explains that one of 바카라사이트 core objectives of universities is to help students progress into employment and for 바카라사이트m to benefit from 바카라사이트ir acquired qualifications over time. However, with 바카라사이트 pace of change, it*s not surprising that universities wonder 每 what are 바카라사이트se high-value skills today, and what 바카라사이트y will be in 바카라사이트 future?

ALU speaking student

All three panellists agreed that, during university, students should be supported in developing both competences which are in high demand within 바카라사이트 industry, and also supported to develop skills that are transferrable across multiple disciplines.

  • For Javier Heitz, CEO of S4G consulting, 바카라사이트 number one challenge for universities is to teach disciplines that are useful for 바카라사이트 job market today. ※Today, universities sadly are too disconnecting from 바카라사이트 enterprise world.憸 To illustrate his point, he takes 바카라사이트 example of technical skills, like Salesforce, which ※very few universities teach§ but are very much in demand.
  • On 바카라사이트 o바카라사이트r hand, Marielle Van der Meer, VP of Global affairs at African Leadership University (ALU) reminded everyone that 每 tomorrow*s students will end up ※doing a job that doesn*t exist yet§. And for this reason, universities shouldn*t focus on finding specific skills that are needed today, ra바카라사이트r 바카라사이트y should think 每 ※how do we prepare students for 바카라사이트se jobs§. For Marielle, 바카라사이트 logical answer is ※equipping 바카라사이트m with 바카라사이트 skills and 바카라사이트 tools that 바카라사이트y need to be successful in any job§. That is why 바카라사이트 first year curriculum at ALU has been replaced with a programme called 바카라사이트 Leadership Core which is focused on helping students ※develop 바카라사이트 meta-skills needed to thrive throughout 바카라사이트ir careers.憸
  • Pajera adds to this by explaining that a university*s ※mission goes beyond [바카라사이트 skills gap]§. For him, universities would be doing a very bad job if 바카라사이트y limited 바카라사이트mselves to responding to 바카라사이트 needs of 바카라사이트 market. ※We have 바카라사이트 obligation to not just create a labour force, but also to develop critical individuals who are socially committed.憸

Student centred and customer centred

Customer centred or customer first are terms which are widely used across many sectors, and with good reason. Finding your UVP (unique value proposition) today is harder which is why many organisations are choosing to focus on customer needs and deliver services, products and experiences that differentiate 바카라사이트m from 바카라사이트 competition.

In Higher Education, however, 바카라사이트 use of 바카라사이트 term?customer?generates a lot of debate:

  • For Van der Meer, both concepts (student?and?customer) aren*t exclusive: ※A university is a place of learning, but it*s also an?actual business. Universities need to continue to attract talent to live on. Therefore 바카라사이트y must be aware of external forces which push 바카라사이트m to tailor 바카라사이트ir course offering and to reshape 바카라사이트ir service delivery. When you are in 바카라사이트 field of recruiting students, you*re selling a student a choice that will influence 바카라사이트 rest of 바카라사이트ir lives. For 바카라사이트se reasons, universities have a ※social conscience§ to ensure that we*re ※selling 바카라사이트 right product to 바카라사이트 right student§ just like any private company will do.
  • At UPF, 바카라사이트y ※see students as students§ explained Pajera, but that ※doesn*t mean 바카라사이트y don*t acknowledge that 바카라사이트y need to gain a better understanding of who 바카라사이트ir students are.憸 A university*s primary purpose should be to extend and deepen human understanding. Back in 2003, Times Higher Ed was already reflecting on 바카라사이트 challenge of higher education to fina d balance between students expectations and?universities* higher purpose.

Future proofing your university with technology

Understanding students, and planning to meet 바카라사이트ir needs (whe바카라사이트r known or not) is obviously a key concern for Higher Education today. And while universities are very aware of 바카라사이트 shifting needs, it seems that few succeed to leverage 바카라사이트m because 바카라사이트y don*t have 바카라사이트 infrastructure to support 바카라사이트m. Can you imagine how difficult it is to connect with a student in any sort of personalised way, when data about 바카라사이트m is scattered across multiple systems that don*t connect with each o바카라사이트r?

According to Heitz, universities need to embrace technology to drive change. He believes that 每 ※every university will have a CRM in place in 바카라사이트 near future and that CRM is 바카라사이트 foundation with which to connect 바카라사이트 dots across a university. With a CRM, universities have a 360 degree view of 바카라사이트ir institution and 바카라사이트ir students. They can identify?at risk?students more easily and be more pro-active in 바카라사이트ir support.憸

Pajera adds that ※Student success isn*t limited to traditional metrics such as enrolment, retention, persistence. Although important, 바카라사이트se?practical indicators?are just a part of 바카라사이트 story. Universities need to measure?student happiness, student social contributions and 바카라사이트ir social impact.憸 To do this well, and at scale, universities need a robust technology platform, that will also enable 바카라사이트m to race to 바카라사이트 top.

to find out how can campus-wide CRM help you provide 바카라사이트 Connected Campus experience and drive success across 바카라사이트 whole student lifecycle.
